A Surgeon with Secrets and a Killer in the Shadows: The Locked Door by Freida McFadden

The Locked Door by Freida McFaddenWhy The Locked Door is the perfect fast paced thriller for a weekend read

There is something incredibly addictive about Freida McFadden’s thrillers and The Locked Door reminded me why I reach for her books whenever I need a quick reset. This one follows Nora, a surgeon who has spent her entire adult life trying to outrun the shadow of her father’s crimes. Her father was a serial killer and the trauma of that childhood sits quietly in every choice she makes. When a new murder mirrors his exact method, Nora’s carefully controlled world begins to crack.

I found the premise immediately gripping. The mix of medical detail, childhood flashbacks and present day tension created a rhythm that pulled me through the chapters with ease. McFadden’s short, punchy structure works especially well here. Every chapter ends with a moment that nudges you forward and before you realise it you have read far more than planned.

The Locked Door by Freida McFaddenWhat worked best for me was Nora herself. She is sharp, guarded and quietly vulnerable. Her past shapes her reactions in ways that feel believable and I enjoyed watching her navigate the fear that she might be pulled back into a story she never wanted to be part of. Even when I suspected the copycat killer early on, the tension never dropped. The book still delivered plenty of surprises and I enjoyed seeing how each reveal connected to the next.

Readers who enjoy psychological thrillers with a strong central character will have a great time with this one. It is fast, entertaining and easy to sink into. If you like stories that mix personal trauma with present day danger, this will scratch that itch.

My general impression? The Locked Door is not trying to be literary or layered. It is here to entertain and it succeeds. It kept me invested, gave me a character I cared about and delivered a twist that felt earned.  A good, satisfying thriller, and a great pick when you want something quick, tense and engaging.
