Chaos, Warmth and a Murder in Italy: We Chase Shadows by Richard Osman

Chaos, Warmth and a Murder in Italy: We Chase Shadows by Richard OsmanI opened this book expecting a good time and found myself grinning almost immediately. There is something wonderfully comforting about stepping back into the world of Amy, Steve and Rosie. Their detective agency is still new, still a little chaotic, and still very much held together by sheer personality. That is exactly why this story works. It is a mystery, yes, but it is also a character hangout in the best possible sense.

The setup is simple enough. A body on the steps of an Italian villa. A threatening note. A client who insists the obvious suspect is not the right one. From there the trio ricochet across Italy, Sweden, Palm Springs and back home again. The plot is lively and full of movement, but what pulled me in was the way these three navigate the mess together. Amy’s sharp instincts, Rosie’s unstoppable flair, Steve’s gentle heart and steady humour. They feel like real people who just happen to be chasing criminals across continents.

Chaos, Warmth and a Murder in Italy: We Chase Shadows by Richard OsmanI found myself laughing often. Osman’s dialogue is quick and bright, and the rhythm of the conversations makes the story feel alive. Steve’s relationship with his cat Trouble is a delight. Amy’s quiet strength gives the book its grounding. Rosie’s larger-than-life energy keeps everything buoyant. Even when the mystery becomes tangled, the characters keep the momentum going.

What worked especially well for me was the balance between humour and warmth. The murders never feel flippant, but the story never sinks into heaviness either. It is a cosy mystery with a bit of grit, a bit of travel, and a lot of charm. I also enjoyed learning more about Amy’s past and seeing how she and Steve support each other. Their bond adds emotional weight without ever tipping into sentimentality.

Readers who enjoy character-driven mysteries will love this. If you like a found family feel, clever dialogue, and a story that moves at a lively pace, this is a great choice. It is not a twisty puzzle that keeps you second-guessing every page, but it is a warm, funny, globe-trotting adventure that leaves you smiling.

I had fun. I felt connected to these characters. I enjoyed the ride. And I am already looking forward to whatever trouble they chase next.
