Death Takes a Holiday and Chaos Follows: Death and Other Occupational Hazards by Veronika Dapunt

My experience reading Death’s very complicated vacation on Earth

I knew very quickly that this story was going to be something special. There’s a certain joy in reading a book that plays with big ideas but still manages to feel light on its feet, and this one does just that. It is funny and oddly touching to watch Death taking a sabbatical from her cosmic duties and trying to live as a human being in London. I was smiling at the smallest details, especially how she tries to navigate ordinary human routines with no idea how anything works.

The premise is clever, but what really pulled me in was the tone. It is darkly comic without feeling heavy, and the humour sits comfortably alongside moments that feel surprisingly sincere. Death’s voice is sharp, curious and often exasperated, and I loved watching her try to make sense of human emotions. Her relationship with her sister, Life, adds a lovely thread of warmth. Their bickering feels familiar in the best possible way, yet beneath it is a bond that carries real weight.

Death and Other Occupational Hazards by Veronika DapuntAnd the mystery element is really good too. The unplanned deaths bring a feeling of urgency and I liked following Death as she tries to make sense of what is happening. It is not a twisty thriller, but it has enough intrigue to keep the pages moving. The touches of romance are gentle and sweet, and they give Death a chance to explore vulnerability in a way that feels earned.

What worked especially well for me was the blend of humour and meaning. The book never tries to be profound, yet it quietly asks questions about purpose, connection and the strange business of being human. I found myself thinking about those ideas long after I finished, not because the book demanded it, but because it made the experience feel personal.

Readers who enjoy dark comedy, supernatural stories with heart, or mysteries that don’t take themselves too seriously will have a great time with this. It is playful, thoughtful and genuinely entertaining. This is a confident and imaginative debut that understands exactly what it wants to be. I closed it feeling lighter, amused and a little more aware of the small joys of everyday life. A delightful read.
