(Blurb from Goodreads)

“The first year is when some of us lose our lives. The second year is when the rest of us lose our humanity.” —Xaden Riorson

Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College—Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky.

Now the real training begins, and Violet’s already wondering how she’ll get through. It’s not just that it’s grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders’ capacity for pain beyond endurance. It’s the new vice commandant, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is–unless she betrays the man she loves.

Although Violet’s body might be weaker and frailer than everyone else’s, she still has her wits—and a will of iron. And leadership is forgetting the most important lesson Basgiath has taught her: Dragon riders make their own rules.

But a determination to survive won’t be enough this year.

Because Violet knows the real secret hidden for centuries at Basgiath War College—and nothing, not even dragon fire, may be enough to save them in the end.

Rebecca YarrosMy Thoughts

“Iron Flame” by Rebecca Yarros is the second instalment in the highly anticipated series set in a world filled with dragons, magic, and epic battles. The story picks up right where the first book left off, with Violet having completed her first year at Basgiath War College as a dragon rider. She is bonded with Tairn, the strongest dragon, and Andarna, a fledgling dragon. Violet’s world is thrown into chaos as she learns her brother, Brennan, is alive and working with the resistance. As the evil venin and their wyvern drain the neighbouring land of magic, Violet must shield her mind, help the resistance, pass her courses, and stay alive—all while grappling with her love for Xaden, the executed resistance leader’s son.

Themes:

The novel explores several themes, including the battle between good and evil, the complexities of love and loyalty, and the challenges of self-discovery and resilience. The backdrop of a richly woven magical world adds depth to these themes, creating an immersive reading experience.

What Worked:

The world-building in “Iron Flame” is meticulous, with each scene and layer contributing to a living, breathing universe. The characters are well-developed, (although I still find Violet, specifically, really annoying). The plot is an intense rollercoaster from start to finish, with numerous twists and turns. The book’s balance of sweet moments, spicy times, real-life issues, and dangerous encounters ensures that there is never a dull moment.

“Iron Flame” will appeal to fans of young adult fantasy, romance, and historical fiction. Readers who enjoy epic battles, complex characters, and richly detailed world-building will find themselves captivated by this series. The book’s blend of mystery, supernatural elements, and emotional depth will also resonate with those who appreciate a well-rounded and engaging story.

Conclusion:

“Iron Flame” by Rebecca Yarros is an intense and captivating continuation of a beloved series. While some readers may find certain plot points drawn out or confusing, the overall experience is one of excitement and immersion. With its well-developed characters, intricate world-building, and compelling plot, “Iron Flame” is sure to leave readers eagerly awaiting the next instalment, “Onyx Storm” (published January 2025). Whether you’re new to the series or a returning fan, this book is a recommended for anyone who loves a good adventure.
