About this book (from Penguin Books SA)
A hilarious enemies-to-lovers rom-com from the author of BEACH READ and YOU AND ME ON VACATION
Set over one sizzling August, BOOK LOVERS is the new chemistry-filled ‘rivals to lovers’ romcom from New York Times #1 bestseller Emily Henry
Nora is a cut-throat literary agent at the top of her game. Her whole life is books.
Charlie is an editor with a gift for creating bestsellers. And he’s Nora’s work nemesis.
Nora has been through enough break-ups to know she’s the woman men date before they find their happy-ever-after. That’s why Nora’s sister has persuaded her to swap her desk in the city for a month’s holiday in Sunshine Falls, North Carolina. It’s a small town straight out of a romance novel, but instead of meeting sexy lumberjacks, handsome doctors or cute bartenders, Nora keeps bumping into…Charlie.
She’s no heroine. He’s no hero. So can they take a page out of an entirely different book?
My thoughts (spoiler-free):
I read “You and Me on Vacation” earlier this year (I had to scroll back on my Goodreads list, it was way back in January, it feels like a lifetime ago!). It was my first “romance” read in a very, very long time and it was actually the book who saw me making a return to romance reads. So, a lot to live up to?
Yes, unfortunately so. The anticipation and excitement to get hold of “Book Lovers” were maybe too much, as I just was not too crazy about this one? Honestly, I can’t tell you why. It should tick all the boxes. Enemies-to-lovers trope – tick, a complex, fabulous female protagonist – tick, a dashing and sensitive love interest – tick, books – double tick! It may be that I simply could not identify with the main characters – for whatever reason. And I was promised a plot twist dammit! Don’t get me wrong – it was an entertaining, humorous and sexy read – it did not blow my socks off though. I did enjoy all the wonderful ‘book related’ references and quotes though! Here are a few favourites:
• “Nora.” He just barely smiles. “You’re in books. Of course you don’t have a life. None of us do. There’s always something too good to read.”
• “Is there anything better than iced coffee and a bookstore on a sunny day? I mean, aside from hot coffee and a bookstore on a rainy day.”
• “Sometimes, even when you start with the last page and you think you know everything, a book finds a way to surprise you.”
• “The last-page ache. The deep breath in after you’ve set the book aside.”
• “She wonders whether what comes next could ever live up to the expectations. She doesn’t know. You never can. She turns the page anyway.”
Thank you to Penguin Books SA for the opportunity to read this book, in exchange for an honest review.
