Review: Nightwork by Nora Roberts

About this book

(via Jonathan Ball Publishers)

When he was nine, and his mother had her first deadly dance with cancer, Harry became a thief. Someone had to find food and pay the mortgage even if his mother was too sick to work. When his mother finally succumbs to cancer, Harry leaves Chicago but somehow he can’t quite leave all of his past behind.

Harry lives a quiet, careful, rootless life – he can’t afford to attract attention or get attached – until he meets Miranda. But just when Harry thinks he has a chance at happiness his old life comes back to haunt him. Harry has had dealings with some bad people in his past but none more dangerous than Carter LaPorte and Harry is forced to run. But no matter what name he uses or where he goes, Harry cannot escape. If he is ever going to feel safe Harry must face down his enemy once and for all.

Only then can he hope to possess something more valuable than anything he has ever stolen.

My thoughts:

“Nightwork” is my first Nora Roberts read in a very, very, very long time. This standalone novel gave me the perfect opportunity to get into the swing of Nora again. It reminded me what a wonderful storyteller she is. It feels like meeting up with an old friend, after years of separation, and the friendship is just continuing where it took off.

I found it very easy to root for Harry/Booth, although some may describe him as a “morally grey” character. We all have a darker side, don’t we? The world we live in is “morally grey” on a good day, so the best we can do is to play the cards dealt to us. And to play those cards as resourceful, intelligent, and clever as Harry – kudos! After all, it is fiction.

What I enjoyed:

• Family (and found family) devotion
• Well-researched and detailed scene-setting (some may find this a bit of a drag though)
• Entertaining and endearing characters
• Harry/Booth is an expert at switching identities and personas – “The Saint” vibes!
• New Orleans – do I need to say more?

I enjoyed this book so much! Pure escapism and a real page-turner. Is the plot a bit predictable? Maybe. Is the book perfect in every possible way? Maybe not. But so what, it was throughly entertaining!
