About this book (via Exclusive Books SA)
Ben Harper, true crime journalist, is about to unravel his most shocking story yet . . . his own. The day his older brother was murdered was the day Ben Harper’s life changed for ever. In one of the most shocking crimes in national history, Nick and his friend were stabbed to death by two girls their own age. Police called the killings random, a senseless tragedy. Twenty years on Ben is one of the best true crime journalists in the country. He has left the past behind, thanks to the support of his close-knit hometown community. But when he learns about a fresh murder case with links to his brother’s death, Ben’s life is turned upside down once more. He soon finds himself caught in a web of lies, one that implicates everyone around him. And on his quest for answers, Ben discovers one very important truth: Everyone has secrets. But some secrets are deadlier than others.
My thoughts:
If you are in the mood for a fast-paced and intriguing crime thriller, this one is for you! As a true crime podcast fan, I immediately was intrigued by this story, that give a personal insight (from Ben Harper, the protagonist) into the aftermath and life-long impact of a tragic case of ‘when teenagers kill/get murdered’ crimes. This is even more intriguing when, approaching anniversary of the killings, a murder with the same MO is committed. It raises new questions and stir up old emotions and painful memories – and increases paranoia in Haddley, the small English village where the crimes were committed years ago.
This is a brilliant debut for Robert Gold, who takes the reader on an atmospheric journey of mystery, grief, numerous plot points and unexpected twists.
This book is noted on Goodreads as “Ben Harper #1”, so I’m interested to see if this will be developed into a series! If so, I’m really keen to read more!
