This book is the second book in the “Travis Devine”/The 6.20 Man series, although I would say that it can be read as a stand-alone novel.
Baldacci masterfully transports us to the quaint town of Putnam, Maine. Here, the air smells of pine, and secrets linger in the shadows of centuries-old trees. The town’s cobblestone streets hide more than they reveal, and its residents harbour their own mysteries. Against this backdrop, Travis Devine steps into the spotlight once again.
Travis is no ordinary investigator. His past is shrouded in enigma, and his skills are unmatched. Recruited by the Office of Special Projects, he operates under the massive bureaucratic dome of Homeland Security. But Travis isn’t just a cog in the machine; he’s a force to be reckoned with.
The novel thrusts us onto a train hurtling between Geneva and Milan. The tension is palpable—the rhythmic clatter of wheels, the anticipation of a tunnel. Travis senses danger; assailants lurk among the passengers. He confronts them, leaving no room for hesitation. But one loose end stays—an enigmatic woman who slips through his fingers. Her presence will haunt him throughout the story.
In Putnam, Maine, tragedy strikes. Jenny Silkwell, a CIA operative, lies dead. Her father, Curtis, a prominent US senator, mourns her loss. The family’s wealth and prestige cast a long shadow, and Travis’s handler, Emerson Campbell, feels a personal connection. Jenny’s murder raises questions: Why was she killed? What secrets did she carry?
Travis dives into the investigation. The town’s lack of investigative prowess surprises him, but he adapts. With full credentials, he poses as a Homeland Security investigator. His mission: unravel the threads of Jenny’s life. Suspicious activity abounds, and the missing CIA-issued laptop and phone hold the key. Travis peels back layers of deception, revealing a web of lies and betrayal.
As Travis digs deeper, the plot thickens. Baldacci weaves intricate threads—a tapestry of secrets, hidden alliances, and unexpected alliances. Characters appear—some allies, other adversaries. Travis’s journey is a rollercoaster ride.
Whether you’re a Travis Devine fan or a newcomer, buckle up. You’re about to experience a heart-pounding ride through the tangled web of Putnam’s secrets.
