Goodreads Choice Award Nominee for Best Mystery & Thriller (2023)
The Leftover Woman by Jean Kwok is an emotional and gripping story of two women from very different circumstances and cultures, who are connected by a deep emotional bond to a child.
Jasmine Yang, a young Chinese woman, illegally immigrates to the U.S. in search of the baby her husband told her died in birth, a victim of China’s one child policy. Rebecca Whitney, a publishing executive, is the adoptive mother of Fiona, Jasmine’s daughter, who struggles with stress and a crumbling marriage. The book alternates between their dual perspectives, as they face tough decisions, second chances, and heartbreak.
The book is emotional, hopeful, and fast-paced, with plot twists that keep the reader engaged. It is also thought-provoking and powerful, as it explores themes such as transracial adoption, motherhood, identity and culture, immigration, and family expectations and relationships. The author, Jean Kwok, is a New York Times bestselling author of Searching for Sylvie Lee and Girl in Translation, draws from her own experience as an immigrant from Hong Kong. She creates strong and realistic characters, with vivid descriptions of their settings and backgrounds.
I enjoyed the book’s exploration of complex and emotional issues. I also liked the suspense and drama of the mystery thriller aspect, as well as the strong character development of both Jasmine and Rebecca. The book made me feel a range of emotions, from sadness to hope, and I was invested in the outcome of their stories.
The book is a mystery thriller with a lot of drama, but it also has some cliché elements, such as the stereotypical portrayal of the Chinese husband, the convenient coincidences, and the predictable ending. However, these do not detract from the overall enjoyment of the book, which is a compelling and touching read. I would recommend The Leftover Woman to anyone who likes stories of family, love, and courage.
