While I haven’t read the works of Kate Quinn or Janie Chang before, “The Phoenix Crown” has certainly stirred my interest, particularly since Quinn’s “The Alice Network” has been on my reading wish list for ages. That was enough to propel this book onto my list of “Most Anticipated Books of 2024”. And it didn’t disappoint.
This novel, set against the backdrop of early 1900s San Francisco and Chinatown, unfolds with a hopeful yet tense narrative, mirroring the anticipation of the catastrophic earthquake that anchors the story’s setting.
The book may start at a slow pace, but it soon finds its rhythm, weaving a rich historical tapestry enhanced with vibrant, compelling characters. The authors’ meticulous research shines through, offering a window into a bygone era marked by both glamour and conflict.
Quinn and Chang’s storytelling is a seamless blend of fact and fiction, where art and music descriptions come alive, which immersed me in the period’s cultural milieu. At the heart of the novel are four women, whose interconnected lives reveal a medley of struggles, passions, and desires. They navigate a world fraught with challenges, from natural to man-made disasters, to murder and sabotage, showcasing their resilience and determination.
The epilogue hints at the dynamic and enjoyable collaboration between the two authors, which is reflected in the book’s impeccable writing and engaging dual narratives. Suling’s perspective offers a poignant glimpse into the racial prejudices of the time, while Gemma’s journey as a soprano, informed by Quinn’s own background in music, resonates with authenticity.
Learning about San Francisco’s history through the novel was an enlightening experience, and I learnt lesser-known aspects of the Chinese immigrant experience post-gold rush.
“The Phoenix Crown” is a captivating read that not only entertains but educates, and it left me with a newfound appreciation for the era and its complexities. It’s a story of perseverance, artistry, and the human spirit’s indomitable will, earning it a well-deserved five-star rating from me.
