Business or Pleasure is a charming and sizzling romance novel that explores the difficulties and joys of being a ghostwriter, a fan, and a lover.
“I’m a ghostwriter. I write books for other people, and they get all the credit. It’s like being a surrogate mother, except I don’t get to hold the baby at the end.”
The main characters, Chandler and Finn, have a hilarious and clumsy one-night stand that turns into a professional and personal partnership. Chandler is a ghostwriter who feels unseen and undervalued in her work, while Finn is a C-list actor who wants to share his story and passion with the world. They agree to work on his memoir together, but also to spice up their sex life with some lessons in seduction. Along the way, they discover more about themselves, each other, and what they truly want.
I enjoyed the chemistry and banter between Chandler and Finn, as well as the insights into the world of ghost writing and fandom. The author does a great job of balancing humour and heat, as well as addressing some serious topics like mental health and self-esteem. The characters are relatable and realistic, with flaws and insecurities that make them human. The book also celebrates creativity and fandom, showing how they can inspire and empower people. The book is full of references to pop culture, especially to a fictional werewolf show that Finn starred in, which adds to the fun and charm of the story.
“I don’t want to be your teacher. I want to be your partner. In everything.”
What I enjoyed:
- Comic-Con vibe
- For Twilight/Buffy fans?
- Insider view into fandoms
- Witty banter
- Author’s sensitivity in addressing mental health topics
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a witty and sexy contemporary romance with a unique premise and lovable characters. Business or Pleasure is a must-read for fans of Rachel Lynn Solomon, as well as for anyone who loves books about books, fandoms, or celebrities. Is it a literary masterpiece? Nope – but that is not what the aim is, this was fun and pure escapism. It’s a book that will make you laugh, swoon, and cheer for Chandler and Finn as they find their happiness in business and pleasure.
