What I read: Don’t Swipe Right by L.M. Chilton

Don't Swipe Right Roelia Reads LM ChiltonDon’t Swipe Right is an entertaining and thrilling novel that combines romance, mystery, and humour in a unique way. The novel follows Gwen Turner, a 29-year-old entrepreneur and part-time barista, who is trying to get over her ex-boyfriend by using a new dating app called Connector.

“Dating is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re going to get. Sometimes it’s a delicious caramel, sometimes it’s a bitter almond, and sometimes it’s a razor blade that slices your tongue open and makes you bleed to death.”

However, she soon discovers that all the men she has dated through the app are being murdered by a serial killer who seems to have a personal vendetta against her.

“I had a theory that online dating was like a game of Russian roulette. You never knew what you were going to get when you clicked on someone’s profile. Maybe they were nice, maybe they were not. Maybe they were honest, maybe they were not. Maybe they were sane, maybe they were not. Maybe they were alive, maybe they were not.”

Gwen teams up with her best friend Liv and a handsome detective named Ryan to find out who the killer is and why they are targeting her.

“He looked at me with a smile that could melt butter. Or hearts. Or panties. He had the kind of face that made you want to trust him, even though you knew he was probably lying. He was the perfect match. Too perfect.”

Roelia Reads Don't Swipe Right by LM ChiltonDon’t Swipe Right is a fast-paced and entertaining read. The novel is full of witty dialogue, amusing situations, and unexpected twists that make it a fun and engaging experience.

“There’s something oddly satisfying about swiping left on someone you don’t like. It’s like a mini act of revenge. You’re saying, ‘No, you’re not good enough for me. You don’t deserve my attention. You don’t even deserve a second glance.’ It’s empowering. And addictive.”

The characters are well-developed and relatable, especially Gwen, who is a smart, funny, and likable protagonist. The novel also explores some serious issues such as online dating, cyberstalking, domestic abuse, and mental health, but in a light-hearted and sensitive way.

Don’t Swipe Right is a perfect book for fans of romantic comedies, cozy mysteries, and true crime podcasts. It is a debut novel by L.M. Chilton, who is a journalist and a former serial dater himself.

“He was the kind of guy who made you feel like you were the only person in the room. The kind of guy who made you laugh until your stomach hurt. The kind of guy who made you forget all your troubles and worries. The kind of guy who made you fall in love. The kind of guy who made you wish you never swiped right.”

The author has created a novel that is original, clever, and captivating. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys contemporary fiction, humour, or suspense.

About the author

L.M. Chilton is a journalist and a debut author of the thriller novel Don’t Swipe Right. He has worked for TV shows like This Morning, The One Show and Loose Women, as well as magazines and newspapers such as The Times, The Mirror, Metro, New!, Cosmopolitan and Glamour. He started his journalism career writing for ‘real life’ magazines, interviewing people from all over the world about the terrifying, hilarious and heart-breaking things that had happened to them. And also funny things their pets had done. He works from home in London, thinking of twists for murder mysteries and practicing the banjo instead of writing (much to the annoyance of his neighbours). Don’t Swipe Right is his first novel, which he describes as a dark and hilarious modern murder mystery set in the terrifying and mystifying world of online dating. He is currently working on his second book, which will be a sequel to Don’t Swipe Right.
