What I read: I Will Find You by Harlan Coben

If you are a fan of thrilling reads, Harlan Coben should be an “auto-buy” author for you! This renowned author has mastered the art of keeping his readers guessing right until the end. You just KNOW that there is a twist coming, so you are waiting with bated breath the entire time!

“He asks me about that, about how a man who could have done such evil could also be kind. I try to explain to him that human beings are more complex than we know, but of course, I don’t really have an answer.”

Five years ago, David Burroughs was sent to prison for the murder of his 3-year-old boy, Matthew. According to eye-witness accounts he was seen burying the murder weapon, but David insists that he is innocent. Having lost his son in such a brutal way, and being accused of his murder, David is a broken man. After refusing visitors for all the time while in prison, his ex-sister-in-law Rachel, pays him a visit. She shows him a photo, taken by friends of hers, of a child that looks suspiciously a lot like Matthew. What is going on here?  (Read the extract linked below!)

“Memory is often our most imaginative storyteller.”

I Will Find You Harlan CobenThere are so many questions! What is Rachel’s motivation for sharing this information with David? Can she be trusted? The same with David – do we know the full story? Will more be revealed?

“Exteriors, you learn, are temporal and illusionary and thus meaningless.”

“I Will Find You” is a standalone thriller (nowadays I tend to enjoy standalones a lot more). As usual, the author constructed a very detailed, well-fleshed out plot. Are there plot lines that seems to be a bit over-dramatic and over-the-top – absolutely! But so what? This is pure, engaging, and intense entertainment.

“We are all so luxuriously stupid when things are good in our life.”

I Will Find You Harlan CobenAlthough David and Rachel are both flawed characters, I was rooting for them all the way (but, with the nagging feeling that I may be disappointed).

“She would never forget her beautiful little boy. Never. No matter what. Not for a second. That was what she realized. You don’t move past something like that—you learn to live with it. No matter how much pain you are in. You don’t fight that pain. You don’t push it away. You embrace it and let it become a part of you. It’s the only way. The only thing more painful than remembering Matthew was the idea she might actually forget him.”

One point of contention is the role and interaction of the two FBI Agents, Max and Sarah, in this book. Are they annoyingly clever or cleverly annoying? The jury seems to be out on that one!

Harlan Coben is a wonderful storyteller, and this book will take you on a fast-paced, action-packed rollercoaster ride. It is filled with suspense and I could not turn the pages fast enough.

“Memories always sting, don’t they? The good ones most of all.”
