The number of debut authors releasing noteworthy books nowadays is simply astounding. And yes, Isabelle Schuler is part of that notable troupe.
“I am Gruoch, daughter of Bodhe, granddaughter of Kenneth, great-granddaughter of Malcolm. I am a princess of Alba, a druidess of the Picts, a queen of destiny. I am Lady MacBethad.”
Lady MacBethad by Isabelle Schuler is a historical fiction novel that offers a feminist retelling of Shakespeare’s Lady Macbeth. And yes, shock horror, I must admit that I haven’t read Shakespeare’s “MacBeth”.
The novel follows the life of Gruoch, the daughter of an ousted king and a descendant of ancient druids, who is prophesied to become the queen of Alba (Scotland). She meets young MacBethad, a fellow royal and a future warlord, when they are both children and forms a close friendship with him.
She is later betrothed to Duncan, the heir elect, but she flees from his hostile and dangerous court after a murder attempt. She reunites with MacBethad, and the rest is history?
Gruoch struggles to balance her ambition, her love, and her heritage, as she tries to fulfil her destiny and become the immortal Lady MacBethad.
“We are not bound by fate, MacBethad. We make our own fate. And ours is to rule this land together.”
The novel is a creative and compelling take on a classic character and a fascinating period of history. It gives Gruoch more agency, depth, and complexity than the Shakespearean version, and portrays her as a intricate and strong character who faced many challenges and dilemmas. She was brave, loyal, passionate, and determined, but also flawed, vulnerable, conflicted, and sometimes cruel.
She was not afraid to pursue her ambition, even if it meant being unlikeable or ruthless, but she also had moments of remorse and regret. She was a product of her time, when the only accepted way a woman could gain power was through who she married.
“Power is not given, it is taken. And I will take it, whatever it may cost.”
And then, my favourite part, the novel features a captivating romance between Gruoch and MacBethad, who share a deep connection and chemistry since their childhood. Their relationship is full of tension and drama, as they face external threats and internal conflicts. They are loyal and passionate partners, but they also influence each other in negative ways.
They are both ambitious and ruthless, but they also have moments of tenderness and vulnerability. They are both haunted by their actions, but they also try to justify them. They are both tragic heroes, who fall victim to their own flaws and fate.
Lady MacBethad by Isabelle Schuler is suitable for fans of historical fiction, retellings, and strong female protagonists. It is atmospheric, suspenseful, and engaging. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves history, drama, and romance.
“There is a fire in you, Gruoch. A fire that burns brighter than any star. Do not let anyone extinguish it.”
