About this book
(blurb from Pan MacMillan SA)
A sweeping, unpredictable novel about power, wealth, and truth, told by four unique, interlocking voices and set against the backdrop of turbulent 1920s New York.
Can one person change the course of history?
The long-forgotten author of a bestselling novel based on a legendary New York tycoon.
The real-life tycoon who attempts to set the record straight.
The young woman tasked with helping him – who turns detective in the process.
The tycoon’s wife, whose missing journals come to haunt them all, long after her death.
In a city devoted to making money and making stories like no other, where wealth means power, who gets to tell the truth? And to rise to the top of a glittering, destructive world, what – and who – do you have to sacrifice?
My thoughts:
I went into this book blind, and I was pleasantly surprised!
The story is about 1920s New York, capitalism, and big wealth.
Written in four parts, by four different persons and narrative styles, which seems to be four books in one. Each part changes your perception of where the plot is heading and the characters you’ve met so far.
It is about money, about power and about the perspective. The writing in intentional and clever. It is addressing the fact that big capital has historically (and still?) been dominated by (privileged) males. And it addresses the question of what impact that exclusively male voices had on the story of wealth. It is very difficult to keep this review spoiler-free, but you must know that “Trust” is an absolute tour de force. Don’t be fooled by thinking that this is a ‘boring, financial’ read – I was engrossed, especially when I started the second part and realised that the flow of the story is.
- Metafiction
- Intelligent writing
- Unique conceptual concept
- Multi-layered plot and storytelling
- Myths vs realities
This is one of my “2022 Books of the Year!” Not surprising it also made the Booker Prize 2022 Longlist.
