“The Reappearance of Rachel Price” by Holly Jackson is a compelling young adult thriller that masterfully weaves family drama and the unravelling of truth into a gripping, twisty mystery.
Jackson’s narrative is entertaining, and it kept me on the edge of my seat. The twists and turns just kept coming. The author’s skill in creating suspense is evident, as each chapter brought me closer to the truth about Rachel Price’s disappearance and subsequent reappearance. The pacing of the story is mostly well-measured, though some parts may seem predictable to seasoned readers of the genre. This predictability does not detract from the overall enjoyment but rather adds a layer of comfort as one navigates the otherwise turbulent waters of the plot.
One of the novel’s strengths is its portrayal of the teenage mind, which some may perceive as repetitive. However, this repetition is a deliberate choice that reflects the obsessive and cyclical nature of adolescent thought processes. It serves as a reminder of Bel Price (Rachel’s daughter)’s age and the intensity of her emotions, grounding the story in a realistic portrayal of youth.
The book also shines in its depiction of the behind-the-scenes dynamics of creating a documentary. This element adds a layer of meta-narrative that is both intriguing and informative, providing a glimpse into the world of filmmaking and the ethical dilemmas that arise when real-life tragedies are turned into entertainment. I adored Ash by the way.
Overall, “The Reappearance of Rachel Price” seems to offer a dark, tense, and fast-paced reading experience that is both thought-provoking and emotionally charged. The book’s exploration of family dynamics, the search for truth, and the impact of past events on the present are themes that resonate with readers, making it a notable addition to the shelves of YA thriller enthusiasts. Holly Jackson’s ability to craft a story that is both a page-turner and a deep dive into complex characters and situations cements her status as a prominent author in the genre. Whether readers are looking for an adventurous and mysterious read or a narrative that delves into the emotional aspects of its characters, this book seems to deliver on multiple fronts.
Although I still haven’t read the author’s “The Good Girl’s Guide to Murder” series, reading this book move it up on my “to be read” list for sure.
