“The epic FINAL chapter to Stephen Fry’s outstanding retellings of the Greek Myths.

Troy has fallen. After 10 years of war, the Greeks make their way back to their own lands – but what homes now await them? Agamemnon must return to his wife Clytemnestra, who has been nursing her rage since he sacrificed their daughter to the gods for a favourable wind. Her revenge will know no bounds.

Meanwhile, Odysseus has angered the god Poseidon, and he is cursed to wander the seas, facing angry monsters and possessive demi-gods as he attempts to return to Ithaca and his patient, clever wife Penelope.”

Stephen Fry's Great Mythology #4 Odyssey Stephen FryMy thoughts

Stephen Fry’s “Odyssey” is a masterful retelling of one of the oldest and most famous stories ever told. The Trojan War is over, and it’s time for the Greeks to head home. However, for some, the journey is fraught with challenges. This is Fry’s fourth book retelling the Greek myths, bringing his conversational, modern tone to the tale of Odysseus and other notable characters like Agamemnon, Menelaus, Clytemnestra, and Aeneas.

This was my first venture into Stephen Fry’s retellings of Greek myths, and it was an absolute delight. Fry’s narrative style makes the intricate tales accessible and engaging, bridging the ancient and the modern with wit and clarity.

Stephen Fry's Great Mythology #4 Odyssey Stephen FryWhat I enjoyed most:
  • Engaging Narrative: Fry’s writing is conversational and modern, making the complex stories of Greek mythology easier to understand and enjoy. His tone is casual and chatty, yet authoritative.
  • Superb Storytelling: The audiobook version, narrated by Fry himself, is exceptional. His performance brings the characters and stories to life in a way that reading alone cannot.
  • Humour and Humanity: Fry infuses humour into the retelling, making characters like Agamemnon relatable in amusing ways while still honouring the emotional depth of the original tales.
  • Comprehensive Retelling: Fry’s version includes important stories and characters, providing a broad view of the mythos.
  • Educational: Fry’s notes and insights throughout the book deepen the reader’s understanding of Greek mythology and its impact on literature and culture.
Stephen Fry's Great Mythology #4 Odyssey Stephen FryWhat could have been better, in my humble opinion:
  • Pacing: At times, the intertwining plots and numerous characters can be a bit overwhelming, especially for those new to Greek myths.

“Odyssey” by Stephen Fry is an enjoyable, informative, and well-written adaptation of Homer’s classic. Whether you are a Greek mythology aficionado or a newcomer, this book is a treat. Fry’s ability to blend humour with serious themes and his engaging narration make this a standout retelling. The audiobook is narrated by the author as well, it is a wonderful experience, as always!
