About this book:
(blurb from Penguin Random House SA)
A new, twisting thriller from the Sunday Times bestselling author of The Coworker and The Housemaid!
She’s looking for the perfect man. He’s looking for the perfect victim.
Sydney Shaw, like every single woman in New York, has terrible luck with dating. She’s seen it all: men who lie in their dating profile, men who stick her with the dinner bill, and worst of all, men who can’t shut up about their mothers.
Until she meets Tom.
Tom is utterly perfect. He’s charming, handsome, and works as a doctor at a local hospital. Sydney is swept off her feet. Then the brutal murder of a young woman—the latest in a string of deaths across the coast—confounds police. The primary suspect? A mystery man who dates his victims before he kills them.
Sydney should feel safe. After all, she has Tom, the man of her dreams. But she can’t shake her own suspicions that the perfect man may not be as perfect as he seems. Because someone is watching her every move, and if she doesn’t get to the truth, she’ll be the killer’s next victim…
A dark story about obsession and the things we’ll do for love, Sunday Times bestselling author Freida McFadden proves that crimes of passion are often the bloodiest…

My Thoughts
The Boyfriend by Freida McFadden is an easy and quick read that grips you from start to finish.
As a fast-paced thriller, it keeps you on the edge of your seat with its clever twists and turns. Freida McFadden has once again delivered a captivating popcorn thriller that will leave you guessing until the very end.
The story is driven by a dual timeline and dual POV, adding depth and intrigue. The protagonist, Sydney, is a frustratingly naive character that will have you wanting to shake some sense into her at times. Despite this, the plot twists are so unexpected that you’ll find yourself constantly reevaluating your theories. Just when you think you’ve figured it out, Freida pulls the rug out from under you.
This book is a testament to McFadden’s skill at creating suspenseful and entertaining stories. From the first few chapters, I was hooked.
The story is set in the bustling city of NYC, adding a dynamic backdrop to the thriller. The alternating POVs kept the story moving at a brisk pace and maintained a high level of suspense throughout. While the final chapters might not have been to my personal taste, the journey there was undeniably thrilling.
Despite some reservations about Sydney’s character and the portrayal of women’s relationships with men, The Boyfriend is a compelling read that keeps you engaged. The twists are unexpected, the pace is exhilarating, and the story is thoroughly entertaining. If you’re a fan of thrillers, you’ll enjoy this one.
The Boyfriend is another great addition to Freida McFadden’s collection. I’m excited to dive into her other works, especially The Housemaid, which comes highly recommended by friends. For anyone looking for a thrilling read with unexpected twists, this book is definitely worth picking up.
